Throwback Thursday- Manu Koech

Manu has come a long way since his first day at PKC. Manu came from another children’s home in a town four hours away from Kitale after being abandoned at the hospital by his mother. We got a call from the children’s department saying that they had two kids that needed a place to stay after the home that they were at had been shut down because they were abusing and neglecting the children.

Manu ‘s first day at the center he was malnourished and very weak. For the first three days he didn’t have the strength to sit up just because he hadn’t been properly fed and he also had malaria, typhoid, rickets and an iron deficiency. One of his arms had also been broken when one of the staff members at the previous home threw him onto the bed, dislocating his arm. He was never treated so now he has permanent damage to that hand. Once he came to PKC he began to improve quickly when he started getting proper care and nutrition.

Manu was so excited on his first day of school.

Manu has fetal alcohol syndrome and cerebral palsy. He is unable to speak, but he understands everything that is going on. He is also unable to walk, but scoots around the floor. He was constantly chewing on his clothes and putting everything in his mouth, so we were able to get him a sensory chewy toy that he absolutely loves. He made up his own sign for necklace to remind us to put it on him if we forget. He doesn’t let that hold him back and loves scooting all around the compound and playing outside with the other kids (even if it means he gets dirty enough that he needs a bath several times a day).

Manu has improved so much since his first day. With food and proper care we began to see the real Manu. He is such a energetic little guy, who is a bit of a trouble maker and has a great sense of humor. He is always keeping us on our toes and making us laugh. He also loves his brothers and sisters at the house and loves playing and laughing with all of them.

We are glad to have Manu as a part of PKC and very proud of him for all the progress he has made and I am excited to see what God has planned for his future.
